Denatured alcohol (Methylated spirits) does a good job without needing any heat. It is flammable, but a bit easier on the ol' lungs than benzene as well.
I usually get a packet or two of the synthetic fabric "J-Cloths" to apply it liberally as they dont shed hairs like most real fabrics, or paper towels do. Use the cloth till its pretty dirty & then swap for a cleaner one, repeating till you're either happy with the cleaning, or you run out!
It will very efficiently strip old diry oil in depth, so be prepared to have your wood go on a BLO drinking binge if you use it! It causes minimal hair grain raising & what there is can easily be knocked back down with gentle buffing with a green "Scotchbrite" pad.
